Rare first edition of Harry Potter book, one of only 500 copies printed, sells for Rs 11 lakh

The copy was initially bought for 30 pence by a collector in Staffordshire who died earlier this year. Many of us who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s were fond of reading Harry Potter books. Author J K Rowling turned a whole generation of kids into voracious readers, transporting them into a magical world as they wished they received a letter from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Now, a rare copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, one of the 500 printed by Bloomsbury in 1997, has sold for a whopping $13,500, approximately Rs 11 lakh, at an auction. The book was a part of 300 copies that were sent to libraries. This particular copy was bought for 30 pence (Rs 30.88) by a collector in Staffordshire, UK, who died earlier this year. The winning bid, which was well above its estimated value of $3,800 to $6,400, came online from Los Angeles, said auctioneer Richard Winterton, who is based in Lichfield, Staffordshire.I literally have this same book at home,” commented an Instagram user. “What is rare about this book particularly,” another asked. “When the book was first released the publishers didn’t think it would be popular so they only printed 500, this is one of the original 500. Two hundred of those were sold and the other three hundred were given to libraries in an attempt to up readership and spread popularity by word of mouth. It worked!” a netizen explained.

Commenting on this post, an Instagram user wrote, “Sirius Black got some serious swag.” Another person wrote, “Why is Hagrid giving Pritam vibes?🤔 😂” While another person wondered, “Why does voldemort has a nose?😂”

A Potterhead urged the artist to include more characters from Harry Potter in the artwork and wrote, “Do more pls. Like Bill Weasley actually being handsomer than in the films. Young sirius black. Young lucius malfoy. I will calm down now. 😌This is not the only time when digital artists have depicted actors in made-up collections based on a popular luxury brand’s aesthetic. In April, people shared AI-generated images that envisioned Zuckerberg out of his normcore basics and in fashionable clothes by brands like Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and Vivienne Westwood. In March, an AI-generated image of Pope Francis in a Balenciaga-style swaggy puffer jacket went viral. This hyper-realistic image, which prompted several memes, was also made using Midjourney.
