More than 1,397 people in France flocked to the famed Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris on Sunday to take part in a record-breaking spelling exercise. The event held in an open-air classroom broke the Guinness World Record (GWR) for being the “largest dictation in the world”.
This event was part of an initiative named La Dictée Geante (the Giant Dictation) that was started by novelist Rachid Santaki in 2013, in a bid to improve literacy across France. The spelling exercise witnessed the footfall of people between the age of 10 to 90.Sunday’s event comprised of three rounds. In each round, a French text was read out loud and the contestants were required to transcribe it without error. For the first round, the text was dictated by journalist Augustin Trapenard. The second round was dictated by writer Katherine Pancol, and rugby player Pierre Rabadan dictated the third round.Images and videos from the dictation have been doing rounds across social media. On Tuesday, BBC shared a video from the event. Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “Love this! This world can do with a lot more spelling exercise exhibitions!”.Another person remarked, “The French language: Maybe one of the few languages whereby the speakers use letters to create sound and then those sounds become homophones which then become words. It can lead to all sorts of ambiguities when it comes to spelling. La dictée (spelling exercise)is dutifully followed in France and making mistakes during that spelling exercise seems inevitable.”
